James Meadows

James R. Meadows, Ph.D., is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and is pleased to have joined Courtyard Counseling Center. Dr. Meadows also holds certifications as an Elementary and Secondary School Counselor and School Psychologist.

In 2002, Dr. Meadows received his Ph.D. in School and Community Mental Health Counseling and Clinical Child Psychology from Mississippi State University. Afterwards, Dr. Meadows completed advanced training in Applied Behavior Analysis and Verbal Behavior Analysis from the Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics and Rehabilitation of the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. After completing his post-doctoral training, he provided in-home Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services to children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as consultation and training to local schools regarding the behavioral and academic treatment of children with ASD. Most recently, Dr. Meadows has served as the clinic director of an outpatient mental health clinic in rural Nebraska for the past nine years. In addition to serving as clinic director, Dr. Meadows served as the Education and Behavior Specialist for surrounding preschools, Early Head Starts, and Head Starts, as well as working as a school psychologist.

On a personal note, Dr. Meadows used to be a foster parent for several years for children ages 1 to 19. He and his wife have three wonderful girls of their own, Nora, 5, Ella, 3, and Sophie 6 months. Dr. Meadows enjoys mountain biking, hiking, traveling, and baking.

Professional Background & Orientation

Dr. Meadows has experience working with individuals with a broad range of concerns. Specifically, he enjoys and has experience in working with children and adolescents, and their families. Some of the most common presenting pediatric concerns Dr. Meadows has treated include: disruptive behaviors (i.e., ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder), developmental disabilities and concerns, aggression, tantrumming, bedtime, anger management, potty training, school concerns, anxiety, depression, and concerns with sleep. Dr. Meadows approach often includes collaboration with your child’s school and primary care physician, in addition with other specialists that may be involved, such as a speech-language pathologist.

Dr. Meadows’ general areas of clinical interest include the treatment of various pediatric concerns. He employs therapeutic techniques and strategies from Behavioral and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy modalities. In practice, Dr. Meadows conducts family therapy to assist the family in managing the presenting concern(s) and strengthening the parent-child relationship. In addition, individual therapy with children is often conducted to teach self-management and regulation when appropriate.

Dr. Meadows specializes in the assessment and treatment of children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (i.e., Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, Asperger’s Disorder). He has been trained in the treatment of behavioral concerns and teaching language and communication strategies to youth with ASD. Specifically, Dr. Meadows has been trained in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Verbal Behavior Analysis (VBA), such treatments include: Pivitol Response Training and Discrete Trial Training/Instruction. ABA/VBA services are the only widely approved treatment of ASD by the U.S. Surgeon General. Each child’s treatment plans are specialized and may include treatment goals of behavioral, social, adaptive, or language or a combination. Dr. Meadows teaches and coaches parents on these strategies and has experience providing consultation to schools regarding the treatment of these concerns.

In addition to specialization in the assessment and treatment of ASD, Dr. Meadows specializes in assessment and treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (i.e., ADHD/ADD) and learning disabilities. Dr. Meadows follows the current guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics for the assessment of ADHD and makes the appropriate recommendations for medication management to your child’s primary care physician when appropriate and provides behavior therapy for the management of ADHD.

Dr. Meadows has worked in various mental health and educational settings, such as preschool, elementary, and secondary schools, hospital, community mental health, community integrated health, psychosocial rehabilitation, and a university setting. Dr. Meadows is a member and has presented at the Association for Behavior Analysis and the National Association of School Psychologists.
